Claude Code timeout: diagnose the missed deadline without guessing
Short answer: A timeout means an operation did not finish within its deadline. It does not identify whether the delay occurred during DNS, connection establishment, TLS, proxy traversal, first byte, streaming, or the application itself.
Anthropic’s public Claude Code documentation describes corporate-proxy requirements and notes restricted or containerized environments as relevant contexts. That is provider-reported guidance, not proof that a proxy caused your timeout.
Evidence sequence
Treat each layer independently: resolution, TCP, TLS, HTTPS response, then any documented streaming behavior. Preserve the time spent in each stage when the tool can observe it. If a browser page works, record it as browser evidence only; the native Claude Code process may have different network context.
Safe checks
- Record the exact timeout time and action without copying credentials.
- Check Anthropic’s official documentation and status surface.
- Test bounded DNS/TCP/TLS/HTTPS stages at reviewed endpoints only.
- Compare one trusted alternate network.
- Re-run the original Claude Code task to verify, instead of relying on a homepage.
Do not disable certificate verification, expose environment secrets, or conclude “Claude is down” from one timeout. Missing evidence remains unknown. Open Probe V0.1 supports Claude DNS, TCP, and certificate-validated TLS only. It has no approved Claude application-layer HTTPS, streaming, or long-lived connection test, and it does not infer root cause.
